Chancel Guild + Sidespeople

Chancel Guild

All-Saints Chancel Guild consists of 42 members who are divided into 6 teams. Each one of these teams takes its turn preparing, with care and pride, the Chancel for both Sundays as well as Mid-week Eucharist. The time of year where our duties are particularly important are Easter, Harvest, and Christmas. Extra time is taken during these periods to ensure that the church is as decorative and colourful as possible. In addition we also put a lot of effort into the preparation of special services such as weddings, funerals, confirmations and baptisms.

The Chancel Guild has 2 formal meetings a year, one in May and the other in November. It is at these meetings that new members are inducted by the Rector. To that end, anyone interested in Chancel work should contact the church office or make inquiries of one of the members as they go about their work in santuary.

Sidespeople

As Sidespeople, we have a variety of responsibilities. We welcome people to the Church, provide bulletins for the Service, receive the Offering, and assist the Clergy and members of the congregation. In addition to Sunday Services, we assist at funerals, and other special Services such as those at, Advent, Christmas, and Easter.

Some of our duties:

  1. Greet the congregation with a cheerful attitude, pleasant smile, etc. As we welcome people, we should be on the alert for newcomers and help them feel comfortable. We should try to stay well informed about Parish activities and worship services.
  2. Provide the congregation with bulletins for the Service. Service bulletins and Prayer Books with large print are available and a wide range of leaflets are also available in the rack at the back of the Church. We can also provide hearing devices for people who ask for them. We may be expected to usher people to their seats.
  3. Check Hymn Boards against hymn numbers listed in the bulletin.
  4. Take up the offering at the appointed time - check bulletin for such details.
  5. When offertory is take up for blessing, pull kneeling cushion(s) across open gateway.
  6. Usher the congregation to the altar rail for Communion, starting with the side aisles.
  7. When sides people take Communion last, pull kneeling cushion(s) back to open gateway for clergy and choir to recess. Please alert the clergy to those people who are unable to go to the communion rail.
  8. During the Service, a member of the team on duty will do a "walk-about" around the Church grounds.
  9. Upon completion of the Service: pick up any bulletins left behind in the pews, check to see that Prayer Books and Hymn Books are arranged properly, and, if necessary, put up kneelers. Lost articles should be taken to the Church Office.

Note: Sidespeople for the 8:30 Service should update the Hymn Boards for the 10:30 Service. If there is a 4:00 p.m. or evening Service, the 10:30 sides people update the Hymn Boards.

Note: Team Leaders for the 10:30 Services should call the church at 9:30 a.m. on Sunday morning and arrange a pickup for anyone who has called requesting a ride to Church.
